Universal has released a new trailer for "Straight Outta Compton," about gangsta rap group N.W.A.'s rise to fame, featuring an introduction by former members Dr. Dre and Ice Cube.
In the clip, the two legendary rappers, who helped found the group in 1986 along with Eazy-E and DJ Yella, cruise through their boyhood neighborhood of Compton reminiscing about the groundbreaking rap crew's early days.
"We put it all in the music, all our frustration and anger," Ice Cube says. "Our music was like our weapon."
"That's the most powerful weapon we got," Dr. Dre adds.
Compton natives The Game and Kendrick Lamar also appear in the black-and-white clip talking about the effect N.W.A.'s music had on them as young fans.
"Straight Outta Compton," due in multiplexes Aug. 14, follows Ice Cube, Dre, Eazy-E, DJ Yella and MC Ren's path to mainstream success in the late '80s and early '90s as pioneers of a new genre of hip-hop focusing on the gritty life in inner-city Los Angeles.
Paul Giamatti plays N.W.A. manager Jerry Heller, whom Dre has blamed for breaking up the group.
And in a buzzy bit of casting, O'Shea Jackson Jr. — Ice Cube's son — is making his acting debut portraying his pop as a young man.
