Lamar Odom still dreams of hitting the hardwood one more time. West Coast sources tells Confidenti@l plans are being kept "on the down low" for Lamar Odom to be a guest star — and maybe even a participant — at BET's Celebrity Basketball Tournament in June. The Sprite-sponsored game would take place at the L.A. Convention Center on June 25, one day before the BET Awards.
Organizers are planning the event with guarded optimism, not only because they want Odom's visit to be a surprise, but also because there of a fear that the 6'10" ex-Laker might not be "well enough" to participate.
"His health issues have meant that returning to pro sport is unlikely, but this exhibition game could a nice way to get back playing," says our West Coast source. "The L.A. fans love the man, thanks to his Lakers' success and reality TV connections, so the crowd would be on his side too."
Odom pals and Kardashian hangers-on Tyga and French Montana are both expected to play in the star-studded shootout. Rapper Snoop Dogg is also on the roster.
Odom made his return to the Staples Center on Wednesday as a guest, and brought his old team good luck. The Lakers, who have been a mess this season, rallied to beat the Miami Heat in overtime with Odom cheering them on.
"Lamar is seriously considering heading to the game as a supporter, but also may put on a (uniform) and play some ball," says our spy closet to the BET event .
"Everything is being kept very much under the radar currently as they feel his head needs to be in the right place. Lamar is still recovering so this is not a certainty, however his friends and celebrity pals want to support him if he goes back to play some ball."
Getting back to good health hasn't been easy for Odom. He's both physically and mentally on the mend following a drug overdose in a Nevada brothel, and was reportedly spotted boozing in Sherman Oaks, Calif., last weekend.
A rep for BET said "We have yet to announce any details relating to the BET Experience Fan Fest, but please stay tuned!"
