DJ Quik's son, David Marvin Blake Jr., has been handed a lengthy sentence for his role in a 2022 fatal shooting that took place in Downey, California. On Friday (February 27), a Los Angeles County judge handed down a sentence of 15 years to life in prison, after Blake Jr. was previously convicted of second-degree murder and shooting from a vehicle in the death of Julio Moises Cardoza Jr. The court granted a defense request to dismiss firearm enhancements that could have added an additional 25 years to life to his sentence. During the hearing, the judge described the case as deeply tragic, noting that Blake Jr. had no criminal record before the incident. She told him that while his actions led to devastating consequences, a single moment does not define a person's entire life and acknowledged that he could eventually be eligible for parole. Blake Jr. addressed the courtroom before sentencing, expressing remorse to the victim's family. He said he was sorry for his involvement and shared that he feared for his safety during the confrontation, insisting he believed his life was in danger at the time. He also rejected being labeled a murderer, saying the situation unfolded rapidly. Prosecutors argued that Blake Jr. should be held fully accountable, emphasizing that he had a firearm during the encounter and ultimately used it. Meanwhile, his defense attorney portrayed the shooting as the result of a fast-escalating conflict, urging the court not to impose additional penalties beyond the base sentence.Family members of Cardoza Jr. spoke emotionally in court, describing the lasting pain of their loss. His mother recounted being present when her son was fatally wounded, calling the experience unimaginable. His sister also expressed disappointment with the outcome, saying the sentence did not feel like justice for their family. Supporters of Blake Jr. painted a different picture, submitting letters and testimony describing him as a devoted family member and a committed member of his community and church. His family insisted the incident did not reflect his character and said he had never been in trouble before. The shooting occurred on May 25, 2022, after Blake Jr. drove to the victim's family home with his employer, former Compton City Councilman Isaac Galvan. According to court findings, a confrontation unfolded, and Blake Jr. later fired a weapon from the vehicle. While the defense argued he had seen a shotgun earlier, the court determined the victim was not armed at the time he was shot.
