A young woman who went to see her doctor for a lesion on her foot got a shocking diagnosis: It was a nipple.
When researchers examined her foot, they were surprised to find a "well formed' nipple, surrounded by aerola and hair, according to an online dermatology journal. Further exams revealed sebaceous glands and fat tissue at the bottom of the lesion.
"To our knowledge, this is the first report of supernumerary breast tissue on the foot," researchers at Universidade Estadual de Campinas in Brazil wrote in their findings.
The 22 year-old mother of was noted to be otherwise completely healthy.
The woman said she'd had the extra nipple on her foot since birth.
The researchers were anxious to biopsy the nipple to investigate the presence of glandular tissue.
"SBT [supernumerary breast tissue] is not exempt from the same diseases and physiologic processes that can affect normally positioned breasts, including the cyclical alterations induced by hormone action, wrote the study authors. "A woman may complain of an increase in size, pain and discomfort, as well as milk secretion."
Supernumerary nipples aren't uncommon – they're present in about 1% to 5% of the population. They're mostly found above the waist and have appeared on the back, shoulder, face and thigh.
