Shaquille O’Neal and David Beckham may want their money back after the company behind the Power Balance bracelet admitted to an Australian court that there is no proof to back up its claims that it improves athletic performance.
"We admit that there is no credible scientific evidence that supports our claims," Power Balance, LLC said in a statement.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission exposed the company’s false claims in a Dec. 22 ruling, ordering Power Bracelet, LLC to withdraw its products from the market in the country and provide refunds to any customers who felt swindled.

Power Balance bracelets have soared in popularity since hitting the market in 2007. The multi-colored wristbands feature an embedded hologram and claim to improve mental and physical performance by partnering with "key frequencies of the human energy system."

"Suppliers of these types of products must ensure that they are not claiming supposed benefits when there is no supportive scientific evidence," ACCC chairman Graeme Samuel told the Daily Mail. "Consumers should be wary of other similar products on the market that make unsubstantiated claims, when they may be no more beneficial than a rubber band."

Taking to its Twitter account, Power Balance, LLC defended its product and posted tweets from customers who still believe in the bracelet’s abilities.

"don't believe what u hear. We stand by our products. (our trainers did test on us and we saw a difference in wearing them)," the company tweeted.

Over 2.5 million Power Balance bracelets have been sold worldwide - for $29.95 each - and have been promoted by numerous athletes like O'Neal, fellow NBA player Lamar Odom and NFL quarterback Matthew Stafford. Celebrities such as Beckham, Robert De Niro, Diddy and Gerard Butler have been known to wear them as well.
