An accused killer in Chicago warned the victim’s cousin “not to snitch” — then confessed to the murder on Snapchat.
In the clip, Anthony Mendoza tells-all in a brief Snapchat video, “I killed Chris and now I’m going to kill myself,” sent to his friends from the back of a police car after his arrest. It is unclear how prosecutors received the damning video, as Snapchats are typically deleted briefly after they are received.
Police said Mendoza, 17, blasted a shotgun into his friend Christian Bandemer’s chest on Friday, while messing around with the deadly weapon.
Chicago officers said the teen pointed the gun directly at the 16-year-old victim’s chest before opening fire, despite Mendoza’s attorney’s claiming the shooting was an accident, according to the Chicago Tribune.
"What this is, is a tragedy. An absolute tragedy," attorney Mike Johnson said.
Bandemer’s cousin rushed in from a cigarette break after hearing a loud pop, Cook County assistant state’s attorney Anna Sedelmaier said in court on Sunday, according to the newspaper.
When the relative ran back in, he saw his dying cousin, trying to stop the blood from flowing out of his wound.
Mendoza had fled the home, tossing the shotgun in high grass at an abandoned house before returning and playing dumb, as he asked the cousin what happened, Sedelmaier told the court, according to the Tribune.
While Bandemer was dying, Mendoza yelled at his victim’s cousin, telling him “not to snitch” on the fatal shooting.
Mendoza is charged with first-degree murder, with a bail set at $250,000. If the murder suspect makes bond, a judge has ordered that he stay away from any firearms.
Bandemer was one of many shooting victims in Chicago over the first weekend of June, as seven people were killed and 32 others wounded by gunfire.
