A Florida man stabbed his bunkmate to death and then drank the victim's blood out of a plastic cup, a witness told police.
Tampa Bay news site TBO.com reported that Mauricio Mendez Lopez, 42, raised the glass in the air before drinking out of it following the murder.
Mariella Mendez, who lived with Lopez and the victim, told police that Lopez then laughed and said "This is my secret."
The Bartow resident was taken into custody Wednesday night. He is facing a slew of charges, including second-degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, felony battery, and two counts of aggravated assault.
Lopez is accused of murdering 32-year-old Macario Cruz on Sunday night. Police said the crime stemmed from Lopez's disproval of a steamy relationship between the Cruz and the witness, who is Lopez's niece and sister of Cruz's wife.
Lopez first confronted the lovers on July 24 and said he would kill them both if they did not end the affair. On that day, he struck Cruz with a 15-pound weight and then chased the couple with a knife.
On Sunday, Lopez went and stabbed Cruz's brother, Juan, in his lower back, causing a minor wound. He then stabbed Cruz to death.
Mendez told police that there is ritual in Mexico where a person drinks a victim's blood to evade law enforcement.
Lopez is currently in Polk County Jail with no bond.
