Black Eyed Peas musician Will.i.am may. or may not, be taking legal action against another hit music man, Pharrell Williams of N.E.R.D, over Williams' new creative brand, a company named "i am OTHER."
According to court documents obtained by Rolling Stone magazine, Will.i.am, 38, whose real name is William James Adams, claims ownership of the copyright to the phrase "I am" and says that Williams' new logo is "confusingly similar."
In writing, Will.i.am argues that Williams, 40, and his use of the similar logo would likely "dilute" the "I am" trademark and lessen the "Will.i.am" brand.
The news of a head-to-head between two of music's biggest producers came as a surprise — especially to Williams. The "Rockstar" rapper issued a statement to the magazine himself.
"I am disappointed that Will, a fellow artist, would file a case against me," Williams said. "I am someone who likes to talk things out and, in fact, I attempted to do just that on many occasions."
"I am surprised in how this is being handled and I am confident that Will's trademark claims will ultimately be found to be as meritless and ridiculous as I do."
According to Rolling Stone, lawyers for Williams filed an answer to Will.i.am's opposition, denying all claims.
But then on Wednesday the Black Eyed Peas rapper appeared to be debunking the whole scenario.
Will.i.am started a series of tweets with the same phrase — a claim that he isn't suing.
"i.am not suing @Pharrell & I NEVER WAS," he wrote, repeating the same statement several times, directly tweeting Williams, and adding links to his various charities.
