A kindergarten teacher in Mexico is being hailed as a hero after a video surfaced showing her ordering her students to take cover and sing songs while suspected cartel gunman executed five people outside their building. In the video, the teacher, who has not been identified, calmly instructs her little ones to lie on the ground and stay down after bursts of gunfire erupt outside the classroom.
"Nothing's happening, sweetheart, just put your little faces on the floor," the teacher tells the terrified kiddies, according to a translation. "Nothing is going to happen…just don't lift your heads please."
As automatic fire rattles on outside, some of the tykes begin craning their necks to see outside.
To distract them, the teacher announces that they are going to sing a song, and begins singing "If All The Raindrops," a song made popular by Barney the Friendly Dinosaur.
The video ends with some of the children lying on their backs, pretending to catch imaginary chocolate raindrops in their mouths.
The classroom was not shot and none of the children were injured, according to local reports.
Mexican authorities said the attack occurred Friday near an unlicensed taxi stand in the northern industrial city of Monterrey.
Gunmen riding in SUVs pulled up to the stand and opened fire, killing four drivers a man whose wife said he had just gotten off a bus, the Latin American Herald Tribune reported.
The neighborhood is known as a hub for "pirate taxis," which serve as lookouts for drug gangs, using radios and cell phones to report police activity.
The killings outside the school occurred less than one day after suspected cartel hitmen killed six people who were riding in a car in the Monterrey suburb of Guadalupe.
