Three bandits fleeing police struck and killed a woman carrying groceries across an upper West Side street Friday night and left a trail of crashed cars in their wake, police and eyewitnesses said.
The late-model sedan caused chaos on Broadway as three cars crashed into one another as they tried to steer clear of the speeding vehicle around 8 p.m.

Then, after busting a U-turn on the busy avenue, the crooks slammed into the 39-year-old woman at W. 90th St., knocking her out of her boots and sending her groceries scattering, cops and witnesses said.

"When he hit her, it was the worst sound I ever heard," said Ashraf Hossain, 24, who saw the deadly crash from the sidewalk.

"People were screaming, 'Watch out!'" said Tommy DeJesus, 22, who works as a doorman across the street and ran to help the woman. "She was under the car by the front wheel. She wasn't moving."

"She was bleeding from the head," he said. "She was just laying there."

The callous trio had swiped packages of Zyrtec, an over-the-counter allergy drug, from a nearby pharmacy and peeled away in their black Dodge Charger when cops tried to pull them over, sources said.

Witnesses saw the car weaving in and out of traffic along Broadway with a squad car - its light and sirens blaring - close behind.

"He ran two red lights," Hossain said. "Then cars just started crashing into each other."

The victim, who wasn't identified Friday night, was carrying a bag of groceries when the car barreled into her, police and witnesses said.

After the tragic smashup, the three goons sprang from their seats and fled the scene.

Cops were able to collar one of the suspects.

"He was running across the street, then back," Hossain said. "And they finally brought him down."

"It was crazy," he said.

The other two led cops on a frenzied foot chase, witnesses said.

"Two of them came running past the [W.91st St.] building," said doorman Michael Gonzalez, 31, adding that he saw police grab one of them.

"The next thing you know, the cop went down and [the suspect] took off," he said.

The two were in the wind Friday night.

After the tussle, allergy medicine was strewn all over the ground.

"There were packets of Zyrtec up and down the sidewalk," Gonzalez said.

The woman was taken to St. Luke's Hospital where she died.

"From shoplifting to murder," Gonzalez said. "How stupid is that?"
