Wanda Sykes, 47, is known for her wisecracks and one-liners. But the Emmy-winning actress surprised the audience at "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" when she revealed she had breast cancer.
"Yeah, I know it's scary," Sykes, mother of 2 ½-year-old twins, Olivia and Lucas, with wife Alex, said on the show, airing Monday.
The comedian explained that her decision to have a breast reduction in February was ultimately her savior.
"I had real big boobs, and I just got tired of knocking over stuff," she said. "Every time I eat … Oh, lord. I'd carry a Tide stick everywhere I go. My back was sore, so it was time to have a reduction."
She continued, "It wasn't until after the reduction that, in the lab work, the pathology, that they found that I had DCIS [ductal carcinoma in situ] in my left breast. I was very, very lucky because DCIS is basically stage-zero cancer."
Because the cancer was in its earliest stage, Sykes had a choice between having a mammogram and MRI every three months to keep track of its progress, and taking immediate action.
"I have a lot of breast cancer history on my mother's side of the family," she explained, adding that she opted for a bilateral mastectomy. "I had both breasts removed … Now I have zero chance of having breast cancer."
Sykes admitted she was hesitant to talk about her cancer and double mastectomy on the show.
"How many things could I have? I'm black, then lesbian. I can't be a poster child for everything!" she joked. "At least with the LGBT issues we get a parade, we get a float, it's a party. I was real hesitant about doing this because I hate walking. I got a lot of [cancer] walks coming up."
