Tupac Shakur-Inspired Musical ‘Holler If Ya Hear Me’ Coming To Broadway

Broadway could be getting less Gershwin and more gangsta.

“Holler If Ya Hear Me,” an in-the-works rap musical inspired by the raw and in-your-face songs of the late rapper Tupac Shakur, hopes to be heard on the Great White Way.

The show, currently underway in a New York workshop production, features Shakur’s music and a book by Todd Kreidler, an associate director on the revival of “Fences.”

The story, set in the present in an unnamed Midwestern industrial city, follows the struggles of two childhood friends and their extended families.

Kenny Leon, who directed Broadway productions of “A Raisin in the Sun,” “Fences” and “The Mountaintop,” is at the helm of the show. “Holler” plans to be part of the 2013-14 theater season.

Before his shooting death at age 25 in 1996 in Las Vegas, Shakur, known for his gritty and confrontational lyrics, had sold 75 million albums.

Afeni Shakur, the artist’s mother, is one of the show’s producers.
