Tito Jackson Wants To Put The Band Back Together

Tito Jackson wants to bring what’s left of the Jackson Five back together to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the 1967 Apollo Theater performance that put them on the map.

“We have been going out doing spotted dates for the last three or four years,” the 63-year-old singer told us at BET’s Soul Train Music Awards at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. “As for a tour, we look forward to that.”

In 2009, Tito and his brothers Jackie, Jermaine and Marlon reportedly began working on a reality show about trying to bring the family and the band back together, but that plan fell apart when Michael — the brother with the most solid argument for continuing on as a solo act — died in June. The remaining Jacksons did manage to get back together in 2012 for a world tour that saw most of its North American dates canceled due to “scheduling conflicts.”

“Right now, we need to get in and make some recordings,” Tito told us. “To get the brothers back in the studio, release a record and get together a tour would be very exciting.”

While Michael’s absence would surely be felt on stage and at the box office, Tito is proud that his own son T.J. has helped raise the King of Pop’s kids. T.J., along with Jackson family matriarch Katherine, was granted joint guardianship of Michael’s kids, Prince, Paris and Blanket Jackson, in 2012.

“I think he is well cut and fitted for the job,” Tito said of his son. “He is very brilliant and very dedicated.”

Tito also says he’s happy he’ll soon be an uncle to his 50-year-old sister Janet Jackson’s first baby, which is due any day now.

“I am glad to be an uncle,” said Tito, confessing that he and Janet haven’t spoken recently. “I am always excited about that ... and to just keep him musical.”

If the Jacksons want to return to the Apollo, they'll be there.

"If it were to come together, we would of course love to have them perform at the Theater," according to an Apollo Theater spokeswoman Nina Flowers. "The Jacksons are a part of the Apollo’s legacy and will always be considered a part of the Apollo family. They last performed here for a sold out show in 2012 and we always welcome to return home to the Apollo."
