Prince and Spike Lee are together again … as defendants in a lawsuit that claims the title song to the movie “Girl 6” was a ripoff of another artist’s work.
According to court documents obtained by The Blast, a guy named James Brandon claims he was part of a group named GOMAB. He claims in 1993, the band made a song called “Phone Sex.”
Brandon claims he demoed the song for Spike’s uncle, who then forwarded it to Spike himself after the director expressed interest. He claims he never heard from Spike again about the song.
Fast forward to 1996 when Spike released the movie “Girl 6” and the soundtrack along with it, which included several old songs by Prince and a new song, the title track. Brandon claims that the song “shares substantial and significant similarities with” his work.
Brandon is suing for copyright infringement and is seeking unspecified damages.
