Spike Lee’s classic 1986 film, “She’s Gotta Have It” has been adapted into a television series on Netflix, with a release date of all 10 episodes on Nov. 23.
The film, Lee’s directorial debut, followed a sexually liberated Brooklyn woman dating three suitors at once — who all show up to dinner at her place. It was a seminal work for both Lee’s career and African-American film.
The show’s 30-minute episodes are all directed by Lee, and will star DeWanda Wise, Anthony Ramos, Cleo Anthony, and Lyriq Bent.
Few plot details have been revealed about the adaptation and how it will differ from the film, but Lee has expressed regretting the rape scene in the last act of the movie.
“It made light of rape, and that’s the one thing I would take back,” Lee told Deadline in 2014. “I can promise you, there will be nothing like that in ‘She’s Gotta Have It,’ the TV show, that’s for sure.”
Lee, in a recent interview with Ebony, said the TV series will probably be as incendiary (on social media) as it was when the film came out — particularly with regard to Nola Darling’s portrayal as a black woman who owns her sexuality.
“I think we’ll have the same types of reaction about who Nola Darling is and it will reflect the fact that there is not just one aspect of who a black woman is,” he said.
