A self-styled Rambo and his accomplice were killed and five Jersey City cops wounded Thursday after a simple pre-dawn arrest exploded into a bloody gunfight, police said.
The suspect - wearing a strap of ammunition and carrying a pump shotgun - was "fully prepared to go to war with us," said Jersey City Police Chief Thomas Comey.
He opened fire on police around 5 a.m. in a shootout that spread from the street to a second-floor apartment before the two suspects were killed, police said.
Two of the wounded officers were fighting for their lives at the Jersey City Medical Center, where they were in critical condition. One was shot in the face, the other in the neck, Comey said.
Dr. Nathaniel Holmes said the officer shot in the face arrived at the hospital in full cardiac arrest with no signs of life.
"It's a miracle that we have made it to this point," Holmes said.
"The officer is still very critical." According to police, a joint team of Jersey City and Port Authority cops were staking out the suspect's car around 5 a.m.
The man and a woman were wanted in connection with a recent shooting at a Jersey City business, a police source said.
When the man approached the vehicle outside 24 Reed St., one officer moved toward the suspect - who brandished his shotgun and opened fire.
The man shot up a police car before heading into the building and ducking into a second floor apartment, police said.
As officers stood in the hallway preparing to move in, "all hell broke loose," Comey said. "The suspects shot through a wall or door ... then it became a shootout."
The two critically injured officers were carried to the street by fellow cops, Comey said.
Another officer was spared when his bullet-proof vest caught a bullet, while two other cops were shot - one in the arm, one in the leg. Those three were in good condition.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene inside and outside the building near the corner of Reed St. and Bergen Ave. Lorrie Day, 37, who lives in a third-floor apartment, said police used a battering ram to smash down the door and ordered her barefoot boyfriend to leave the building immediately.
Charles Benjamin, a butcher who lives on the block, recounted hearing "three loud booms, then what sounded like a bunch of firecrackers going off."
"I looked out the window and saw four cops huddled over a police officer lying on the ground," Benjamin said.
"There was blood everywhere. The cop was not moving." Benjamin said a female police officer yelled at witnesses to take cover. "Get your heads down, get your heads down!" she shouted, choking back tears.
"I hate this city!" she cried repeatedly, Benjamin said. Richard Asakiewicz, 32, an eyewitness who lives on the block, said the carnage happened quickly.
"I saw three cops run into the building on the corner," he said. "All three came out shot, one in the leg, one in the arm, and one in the chest. "The guy shot in the chest looked pretty bad.
Two more cops went in and they got shot." Askakiewicz said the shooters were a man and a woman, who both appeared to be in their 20s.
Area residents said the apartment building where the shooting took place is known for drug activity.
"Its a bad corner. Everyone knows to stay away because that's where the dealers hang out," said Hector Fuentes, 34. "It was only a matter of time before something like this happened."
