Nicki Minaj Talks Girl Power And Racial Equality

Nicki Minaj wants to tell her fans what’s good.

The reigning queen of hip hop, who has carved herself a well-defined niche in the male-dominated rap game, explained she took lessons from other artists and simply put in the hustle to get where she is now.

“I don’t need to read a book about business. I can look at someone’s career and just pinpoint the dos and dont’s, and the one person I’ve done that with for my entire career was Jay Z,” the 33 year-old performer told Marie Claire. “He did such a great job being an authentic street guy and a businessman, and I was like, ‘Why aren’t there women doing that, taking the success from rap and channeling it into their empire?’

“I felt like anything [Jay Z] could do, I could do.”

The “Bang, Bang” singer went on to encourage women to put in the work and have big goals for themselves instead settling.

“I want your goal in life to become an entrepreneur, a rich woman, a career-driven woman,” she said. “You have to be able to know that you need no man on this planet at all, period, and he should feel that, because when a man feels that you need him, he acts differently.”

Minaj, a Trinidad native, also advised fans to battle through the double standard that has come to a head in the industry when it comes to performers of color.

“When Kim Kardashian’s naked picture came out, [Sharon Osbourne] praised it, and my fans attacked her for being a hypocrite. So it wasn’t trashy and raunchy when a white woman did it, but it was when a black woman did it?” she pointed out. “It’s quite pathetic and sad, but that is my reality, and I’ve gotten accustomed to just shutting it down.”

This isn’t the first time the “Super Bass” singer has highlighted the industry’s double standard — last year after receiving backlash for a butt-baring “Anaconda” promo photo, the rapper shared a Victoria’s Secret advertisement, questioning why one was okay but not the other.

“Angelic. Acceptable. Lol,” she captioned the latter.
