IN THE STREETS & ON THE WEB

Known for his raw lyrics, Chic Raw (pronounced Cheek) has made a name for himself in the underground music world. April 16th, 1984 Chic Raw was born Darren Martin. Though Chic was born and raised in Philadelphia, he moved around often. In Chic’s earlier childhood life was ruff or should I say abnormal. With their mother falling victim to the harsh streets of Philly, Chico and his older brother Darryl (Bucks) Martin was left to raise each other .The two became very responsible and adapted well to the streets. With neither parent present, Guardian Angel, Patricia “Aunt Pat” Stewart came to the rescue. Aunt Pat provided what these two innocent young souls needed, a home, guidance and structure. Aunt Pat loved others more than she loved herself but by no mean was gullible. Both Chic and Bucks were the men of the house at a young age and were expected to act accordingly. Aunt Pat always had bars of wisdom: “Either you are going to do something or be nothing”. She made sure they were involved in as many extracurricular activities as possible. Aunt Pat entered the boys into all the activities because she knew it was foundation. Being involved with the community gave Chico exposure. Aunt Pat really set the ground work for the mission. Both boys were honor roll students from K-8th grade. It was not until High school when Chico decided that the streets had a pulse and the knowledge and guidance his Aunt Pat was offering had already been understood. By Chico’s sophomore year, his brother Bucks graduated from G-Town nand went to college, leaving Chico solo on the scene. Standing alone in the lime light chic raw deicide it was time to become his own man and he needed a new plan. Not only was his grades falling he started falling deeper and deeper into the streets on to the underground rap scene. Always busting in the cipher along the hallways of Germantown High School with his intense, real and raw lyrics Chico had started to gain respect as an MC amongst his peers. That was a start but the mission was to take over and he had to make his name ring bells worldwide. So he started doing more rap battles in the Philly, New Jersey, and Delaware areas. With his name spreading fast and people taking a like to his harsh real life lyrical realities, the underground started to refer to the Chico as Chic Raw.
“Chic Raw shouts to the streets dog/ niggas relate to me I’m from the streets dog.” (Chic Raw)
Now with his buzz bubbling other underground MC sought after Chic to do collaborations, mix tape productions, and shows.
Being a part of the underground scene brought Chico closer to his dream but pulled him further away from school, which created beef with Aunt Pat. Within Chico’s first months in his senior year and no change in his grades or attitude, Aunt Pat decided to do what she thought was right and put Chico out. Now out on his own realizing the grass is not as greener on the other side, wanting to be with his family, his pride wouldn’t allow him. He wanted to show that he could be his own man. In order to provide for himself he began the life of a hustler. Chic new way of living wasn’t satisfactory to his Aunt Pat and further strained their relationship. Unfortunately in 2002, Aunt Pat passed away without understanding Chic’s mission to become a star MC. With the passing of Aunt Pat the harsh and raw realities Chic spoke about in his music begin getting closer to home. The first knock came when the house he was raised in was shot up in hope of harming him. Their bad, his mission kept going with threats lurking.
Now in the fast lane it’s harder to keep up with your surrounding and in the following weeks enemies caught up with Chic: two shots, one in the arm, and one in his back. From this point on it was understood that Chic is a high commodity dead or alive and he rather it been alive and spitting’. Chic’s mentality took a far turn more so into thug life than music. Off track and fueled with vengeance Chic Raw began hanging with the wrong crowd. Caught up in the heat of the game, making hasty decisions, more bad weather started coming his way. Amongst all the bad weather Chico knew he had a blessing coming. With his daughter on the way he had to make changes in his life, and he did. November, 2006 Jadae Wallace was born. Though Chico had income coming in from his music, being used to the drug money sent him back on his way to the streets. In 2007, Chico was arrested and convicted on drug charges out of state.
A blessing in disguise still not fully appreciated, but Chico served, a thirty six month sentence in federal prison which slowed down “Chic Raw”. His situation proved challenging with family outside the bars and home based not secure. Chico decided his past was to be just that, the past. Now regrouping with a calm and clear mind, Chic began to strategize his game plan for when he returns home. Back to Aunt Pat’s words family first The music and the real and raw lyrics of CHIC RAW… Mission is TAKEOVER!!!!!!!
