A 14-year-old Aboriginal boy in Australia has been missing and presumed dead after being attacked by a crocodile while swimming in a creek Sunday, police said..
The unnamed victim was playing with his brothers on Milingimbi Island, a remote part of the Northern Territory of Australia, when the crocodile bit him. Police told The Australian that he was then most likely swept away by a tidal wave.
"I guess there is always hope (that he will be found alive), but I think it unlikely," NT Police Superintendent Helen Braam told the newspaper. "I think we're looking for a body."
Investigators said that land and sea searches started Sunday after the boy went missing – but there's been no sign of the teen. The search is being slowed by low tide which makes it hard for boats to aid the search.
Despite the obstacles, police said the community had rallied together to help find the missing boy.
"They've just been fantastic in support of the police and searchers out there," police told the newspaper.
The latest attack is likely to revive calls to allow safari crocodile hunting, observers said. Killing crocodiles has been strictly restricted since 1971 when the animals were near extinction. But with more than 80,000 saltwater crocodiles now in the Northern Territory, many political groups have called for the ban to be lifted.
One police superintendent on the case told the Australian he was nervous that people weren't cautious enough about the dangerous reptiles.
The government launched campaigns such as "Be Croc Safe" with tips on how to avoid accidents. But if found dead, the 14-year-old will be the second young person killed in the region in the past three years by crocodiles, the newspaper reported.
Last week, three men were feared dead after they went missing in the region in similarly crocodile-infested waters.
That story had a happy ending though: the trio was found alive and well, the Australian Broadcasting Company reported.
