IN THE STREETS & ON THE WEB

LOL! AINT NOBODY FEELING FACEBOOK'S NEW DESIGN!

Facebook's decision to redesign its users profile pages has some wishing its engineers had created a "dislike" button.
The revamp, announced Sunday afternoon in a blog post by Facebook engineer Josh Wiseman and touted in a "60 Minutes" interview hours later by founder Mark Zuckerberg, is receiving mixed reviews from users who appear anxious about having their photos and personal information more prominently displayed on the site.

Wiseman wrote that the changes would make it easier "for you to tell your story and learn about your friends," and in the "60 Minutes" interview, reporter Lesley Stahl said the new design offers the experience of having a barroom chat with someone.

In the new layout, a short summary of the users' personal information, such as his or her job or college, and a small collection photos appear at the top of the wall, underneath the users name and profile picture.

Previously, personal information and photos were kept on separate tabs.

By early Monday morning, Wiseman's blog post was flooded with commenters pleading to change their profiles back to the old look.

"I don't like it. Too messy. I love the previous features ... I don't like all my information (like when I was born, where my current location, etc.) appear directly on the top of the page," wrote user Jenita Voo.

Hundreds of other users agreed that the new layout was "messy," and said that the old version was more organized.

A tech blogger at Forbes reported that the font size appears to have shrunk to 9 point font from 11 point font, and several users complained that information such as wall updates are harder to read.

"I mean, seriously! I'm going to have to pull out my monocle for this," one user posted to Twitter.

Not everyone had harsh words for the new look. More than 17,000 people clicked the "Like" button in response to Wiseman's blog, and several commenters responded that they liked the new page and offered suggestions to improve it.

Facebook has come under fire before for changing the way users' information is displayed on their pages.

The site's decision to tweak users' privacy controls in 2009 sparked a backlash that led to complaints with the Federal Trade Commission, and previous layout changes and redesigns have stirred a similar wave of complaints from users who said they were happy with the current version.

Facebook is not allowing users to switch back to the old design, but several commenters claimed they had figured out how to make the swap.

The site is allowing users to make the change manually for now, but eventually, every user's profile would switch to the new version over by early next year, whether they want it or not.

So far, Facebook has not announced any plans to switch back to the old look and appears ready to ride out the latest wave of criticism, figuring skeptical users will eventually come around.

One user aimed to capture the overinflated spirit of panic in a seemingly tongue-in-cheek response to the blog post.

"AAAGGGHHH!!! I FEAR CHANGE!!!" wrote user Kurt Morris. "Even though it's an improvement over the previous profile page I HATE IT because it's different!!!"
