IN THE STREETS & ON THE WEB

The Secret Service has a new agent -- Twitter.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security rolled out the Secret Service's official Twitter page Monday, with three inaugural tweets.

"Follow us for info on recruiting events, press releases and our dual mission," it tweeted.

The account is meant to help boost recruitment, the department said in a statement.

"The Internet is a valuable resource for people all over the world," Secret Service Assistant Director Mickey Nelson said. "By using social media sites, we hope to supplement our recruitment efforts, while providing an informative, helpful tool to businesses and individuals who are interested in information from our agency."

The account quickly snared more than 4,500 followers - but was not following anyone.

The irony of one of the country's most stealth organizations using what many find to be a tool of oversharing amused many other Twitter users.

"Thank god the President's twitter account is finally safe," one user tweeted.

"The U.S. Secret Service just got an official Twitter account. Too bad you need a level three security clearance to follow them," another added.

While the Secret Service having a Twitter account may seem strange, most government agencies and politicians - including President Obama - use the site.
