Lizzo Tells Monica Lewinsky She's 'Deeply Offended' How Media In The '90s 'Talked About Woman's Bodies

Lizzo is revisiting how women’s bodies have been treated in the public eye During a recent appearance on Lewinsky’s Reclaiming podcast, the singer said she was “deeply offended” by how media coverage in the late ’90s and early 2000s scrutinized women’s bodies, pointing to examples that continue to resonate today. Lizzo reflected on the intense criticism Lewinsky and other women faced during that era. “Sometimes I’m actually, like, deeply offended by how the media talked about y’all’s bodies,” she said, referencing the broader cultural climate that also targeted figures like Jessica Simpson over her widely discussed “mom jeans” moment. Lizzo added that younger audiences may not fully understand “how intense and how strict and harsh society is, and was, on women’s bodies.” The conversation also touched on how standards have shifted over time. Lewinsky shared that she once “sobbed for hours” after seeing a caricature of herself, underscoring the emotional toll of that scrutiny. Lizzo, who rose to prominence in a different media landscape, acknowledged that her career unfolded during a period of evolving conversations about body image and representation. Lizzo explained that breaking through in the industry required her to challenge those expectations directly. “I had to be undeniable like undeniably talented, undeniably beautiful, undeniably likable, undeniably myself,” she said, noting that she often felt dismissed “based off my body alone.” She also addressed reactions to her recent weight changes, noting that some critics questioned whether she still represented body positivity. “The truth is I really love myself to be able to do this,” she said, adding that her lifestyle changes were about feeling better physically rather than meeting outside expectations.
