JOHN MAYER APOLOGIZES FOR HIS RACIST & SEXIST STATEMENTS IN PLAYBOY! LIKE WHAT DOES HE EVEN KNOW ABOUT A HOOD PASS!

After stirring up a heck of controversy yesterday, John Mayer is talking again – but this time, his words are full of repentance.

Feeling the backlash from his recent Playboy interview in which Mayer used the N-word, the singer broke down last night while performing his song, "Gravity," at a Nashville concert, Usmagazine.com reports.

"In the quest to be clever, I completely forgot about the people that I love and that love me," Mayer reportedly told the audience at the Sommet Center.

The 32-year-old singer came under fire Wednesday for comments he made to Playboy when trying to explain why "black people love me."

In the magazine’s Q&A published online, Mayer said he was recently asked, "What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?" He went on, "It's sort of a contradiction in terms, because if you really had a hood pass, you could call it a n----r pass. "

While at the show, the singer admitted he had entered into a world of "selfishness and greediness and arrogance." He said he had thought he could just be "speedy and witty and pull together as many fast words and phrases as I could, that I would be clever enough to buy myself another day without anybody pinning me down and saying, 'You're a creep.'

"I should have just given that up and played the guitar," he continued. "I didn't. So I decided I would try to be as clever as possible all the time and I did that at the expense of people that I love and that feels absolutely terrible."

Mayer pointed out that his band members, some of whom are African-American, were not on stage with him because they condone his controversial interviews – "They're on this stage because they support myself as a possible future grown-up," he said.

With an audience cheering him on, the singer reportedly got choked up before adding, "Maybe they see something that I don't. So maybe I need to take a break from trying to be clever and spend a little time looking at what they see - because they've done an unbelievable thing by standing on this stage and standing by my side playing tonight."

"It's just not worth being clever. I quit the media game. I'm out. I'm done. I just want to play my guitar,” he said before launching into a guitar solo.

Mayer’s onstage admission was reminiscent of his lengthy apology posted earlier in the day on Twitter.

"I am sorry that I used the word," he tweeted. "And it's such a shame that I did because the point I was trying to make was in the exact opposite spirit of the word itself. It was arrogant of me to think I could intellectualize using it because I realize that there's no intellectualizing a word that is so emotionally charged.

"I wanted to be a blues guitar player. And a singer. And a songwriter. Not a shock jock. I don't have the stomach for it. "
