John Legend Wants Pres. Trump To Win Nobel Peace Prize

John Legend says he wants to see President Donald Trump receive the Nobel Peace Prize, In a video shared to his Instagram on Saturday (Oct. 11), Legend offered a candid, critical, and at times seemingly sarcastic take on Trump’s well-documented desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Speaking directly to camera from what appeared to be his home, Legend spoke of his personal connection to the award, having performed at the Nobel ceremony in 2017. He also noted that the award had been given to human rights activists like Martin Luther King Jr. (1964), Bishop Desmond Tutu (1984), and Nelson Mandela (1993, shared with South African President Frederik Willem de Klerk), as well as to leaders involved in brokering peace. Turning to Trump, Legend said, “Guys, I probably don't have to tell you that man really, really wants a Nobel Peace Prize. He's talked about it publicly many times. He's reportedly called a bunch of world leaders privately, begging them to put in a good word with the Nobel Peace Prize Committee. He really, really wants this Peace Prize, y'all.” The “All of Me” singer acknowledged Trump’s recent involvement in a new peace deal in the Middle East between Israel and Palestine. “We all want to see peace in Gaza, in Israel, in the West Bank. And President Trump has been instrumental in bringing about this new peace deal. Let's all pray that this deal is actually lasting, that it's long term, the people of Gaza have had their lives and their communities destroyed for the past two years. “Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7th was horrific, and they've held dozens of hostages in captivity, and then the Israeli response has been utterly devastating, obliterating cities, killing, maiming and starving tens of thousands of Gazans. For the sake of humanity, this war needs to end. And if this peace is really lasting, we just might see Donald Trump get that peace prize that he really, really wants,” Legend said. However, the singer argued that securing the prize would require a dramatic overhaul in Trump’s overall conduct, saying the president would need to “stop all this authoritarian dictator shit, all the fascist shit, all the inhumane shit he's been trying to do.” “He'd have to stop sending Black Hawk helicopters to terrorize people while they sleep in their apartment buildings in Chicago,” Legend said, referring to the ongoing ICE raids in the city. “Yes, the so-called ‘peace president’ who's ending wars around the world would also have to stop declaring war on the American people. Stop sending the military into our cities simply because they're run by Democrats. “Stop sending masked, unaccountable ICE agents to torment immigrant communities, stop ordering the prosecution of his political opponents on flimsy charges. He'd have to stop bombing boats in the Caribbean. Stop executing people without proving that they've done anything wrong. Maybe he'd have to refund USAID and restore humanitarian aid. Stop starving the most impoverished and vulnerable people around the world.” After suggesting “a serious change in your governing philosophy,” Legend concluded the video saying, “But as a parent, I've learned that kids respond really well to positive reinforcement. So Donald, we've tried negative reinforcement, impeachment, indictments, voting you out of office. So let's try positive now. Let's promise that if you get it together, you change your awful behavior, you're gonna get that peace prize that you so, so badly desire. And I'll be so proud of you, Trump said on Friday that Machado called him personally, saying she had dedicated the award to the people of Venezuela and to himself. He quoted her as saying, “I’m accepting this in honor of you, because you really deserve it.” Trump quipped, “A really nice thing to do. I didn’t say, ‘Then give it to me, though.’ I think she might have.” Meanwhile, the White House accused the Nobel Committee of “placing politics over peace” by awarding the prize to Machado instead of Trump, per the BBC Nominations for the award had closed in January 2025, just days after Trump returned to office for his second term.
