During the latest episode of his Joe and Jada podcast, Fat Joe recounted an awkward run-in with the Grammy-winning singer at an awards show. According to Joe, the exchange turned tense when he questioned Mars’ Puerto Rican heritage. “You know, he’s Puerto Rican at least that’s what they say,” Joe began, explaining that he’d been waiting 15 years to finally meet Mars. “I was excited to meet him.” But before making his move at the awards show, Joe says someone tried to stop him. “The guy next to me said, ‘You might not want to do it. He’s a f**k ni**a,’” Joe recalled. “I said, ‘What? Yo, Bruno, what’s up, man?’” The “Lean Back” rapper claims that Mars, who was seated with Anderson .Paak, wasn’t exactly thrilled by what he asked him next. “I’m like, ‘Yo, you Puerto Rican?’ He got up [and said], ‘The f**k you mean? I’m a real Puerto Rican from Bushwick, Brooklyn! Don’t ever ask me that sh*t in your life.’ While the Silk Sonic crooner was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, his father, Peter Hernandez, is of Puerto Rican and Jewish descent and hails from Brooklyn. Joe said the moment caught him completely off guard. “Man, broke my heart,” he admitted. “I wasn’t challenging him. Like, tell me something. Who’s your father? [I asked in] the nicest way. [We’re at an] awards [show]. He added that he expected a more casual exchange, something like: “’Yeah, I’m Puerto Rican. What’s up, bro? I love Big Pun,’ something.” He further recalled, “Man. Screamed on me. Went to the other room and was mad. Turning his response directly to Bruno Mars via his podcast, Joe made it clear that he’s holding no grudges. “Bruno, if you don’t remember it, I forgive you. But you did that, brother,” he assured, even joking that maybe Bruno took the question so personally because he might have “beat up” his dad back in the day.
