A tourist fell to his death at India’s iconic Taj Mahal as he posed for a selfie.
The Japanese man, identified as Hideto Ueda, allegedly tumbled down a staircase inside the mausoleum as he tried to take the picture.
The 66-year-old lost consciousness and was later pronounced dead at a hospital, an eyewitness told the BBC.
“He was rushed in an ambulance to the hospital but he could not be revived," Sushant Gaur, a police official in Agra, reported to the Japan Times.
"A postmortem was carried out and the cause of death is heart attack. We have duly informed the Japanese Embassy about the unfortunate incident."
A friend who also fell suffered a fractured leg, according to witnesses.
The Taj Mahal, in the city of Agra, was built in the 17th century by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb following his wife's death.
One of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, it attracts about 12,000 visitors a day.
There has been a rising number of injuries and deaths linked to selfies in recent years.
The Russian government launched a campaign to warn people about snapping pictures in risky locations, while a man in Spain was gored to death while posing at a bull run earlier this year.
