Ice Cube is reportedly set to play Fagin in a modern musical remake of Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist” from “Hamilton” director Tommy Kail, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Fagin was the leader of a gang of pickpockets in London in Dickens’ 1830s novel.
The book has been remade into a number of movies, including Roman Polanski’s version in 2005, a 1997 film starring Richard Dreyfuss and Elijah Wood and the animated “Oliver & Company.”
The 1968 musical “Oliver!” was nominated for 11 Academy Awards. The stage musical upon which it was based was nominated for nine Tony Awards in 1963.
The new movie, from Disney Studios, will be “crossing many genres, including hip hop,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Ice Cube most recently starred in “Ride Along 2,” and also produced “Straight Outta Compton.”
Kail, who collaborated with Lin-Manuel Miranda on “In the Heights” and “Hamilton,” also directed “Grease Live!”
Cube doing musicals with Disney is a come up.
