Gilbert Arenas Sues Laura Govan Over False Accusations Regarding STD's

While Knicks coach Derek Fisher and Matt Barnes fight over Barnes' estranged wife Gloria Govan, another NBA legend is crying foul over a "vicious scheme" allegedly concocted by Govan's older sister.

Former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas sued former fiancée Laura Govan in Los Angeles this week claiming she caused several websites to publish "false accusations" that he infected her with sexually transmitted diseases as part of a revenge ruse, the complaint obtained by the Daily News said.

The defamation lawsuit claims Laura got "angry" when he ended their engagement, so she sent him an email on Sept. 22 that fraudulently stated, "When I left you it was because I couldn't take the STDs."

The former point guard for the Orlando Magic and Memphis Grizzlies claims he was never the intended audience for the "libelous" email. He says Laura - the mother of his four kids - only sent it as part of a "malicious plan" to quickly leak the message to media outlets.

"Defendant Govan's intent in this scheme was to embarrass plaintiff Arenas and to cause irreparable harm to his reputation," the lawsuit states.

He claims 13 websites published the accusation.

"As a direct and proximate result of defendant Govan's intentional, malicious, harmful and offensive acts, plaintiff has sustained severe and serious injury to his reputation," the lawsuit states.

Arenas said he wants a jury trial and an award of real and punitive damages.

Attempts to reach Laura, 36, and her lawyer were not immediately successful.

The new lawsuit came after Laura sued Arenas, 33, back in March claiming he breached an oral contract to support her financially.

The couple met around 2003 when Arenas was playing for the Golden State Warriors, and they broke up late last year, her lawsuit says.

"Throughout their relationship, Gilbert repeatedly assured Laura that she did not have to worry because he would take care of her for the rest of her life," her lawsuit also filed in Los Angeles claims.

In her filing, Laura said she was a 21-year-old college student studying sports psychology and working part time for the Warriors in Oakland, Calif., when she began dating Arenas and became pregnant with a child she miscarried.

They moved in together and decided to start a family — and Laura spent the next decade as Arenas' constant companion, confidant and homemaker and the mother of his kids, according to her complaint.

The couple had a daughter in 2005 and a son in 2007 — and Arenas proposed marriage with a $1 million engagement ring in 2008, her lawsuit says.

They had another daughter in 2009 and a second son in 2011. Laura also joined the reality show "Basketball Wives," but Arenas eventually convinced her to quit the show, the paperwork claims.

Her lawsuit alleges that Arenas "forcefully took" the engagement ring and sold it sometime in 2015. It also claims he denied her access to a 50 percent interest in the wealth accumulated during their alleged partnership.

Arenas denied selling the ring in a subsequent filing.

In his new defamation claim, Arenas said Laura has become "so destructive" since their relationship ended, he had to get a restraining order.

He said she is barred from coming any closer than 100 yards and has been ordered to take anger management classes.

Laura and her sister Gloria Govan both appeared on "Basketball Wives LA" in 2011.

Gloria, 29, made headlines this week with news she had Fisher over at her Redondo Beach, Calif., house around 11 p.m. on Saturday when her estranged husband Matt Barnes showed up and cops were called.

Barnes, now a player for the Memphis Grizzlies, told ESPN he went to the house to check on his twin 6-year-old sons after one of them seemed distressed during a FaceTime call and said, "Mommy's friend Derek is here."

The 35-year-old NBA forward — who previously was teammates with Fisher on the Los Angeles Lakers — allegedly punched Fisher in the mouth with a closed first and berated him for dating Gloria, according to TMZ.com.
