Frank Ocean Purposely Didn't Submit Albums For Grammy Consideration

Musician Frank Ocean doesn't need a Grammy to validate his worth.

The "Blonde" artist purposely did not submit his highly-anticipated albums of 2016 for Grammy consideration, noting that only a handful of black artists have won the award — himself included.

"That institution certainly has nostalgic importance. It just doesn't seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down," he told the New York Times.

"I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated. I'd rather this be my Colin Kaepernick moment for the Grammys than sit there in the audience," the 29-year-old continued, referencing how the San Francisco 49ers quarterback has protested standing during the national anthem.

Ocean put out the album "Blonde" in August just two days after the release of his visual album "Endless."

New music from the singer was highly anticipated after he nabbed the "Record of the Year" Grammy for "Thinkin Bout You" in 2013. Fans posted about the emotional rollercoaster they went through while waiting four years for his latest jams.

The R&B star caused quite a stir when it was initially revealed he wasn't up for consideration. Fellow artist Kanye West — who Ocean won a second Grammy with back in 2013 — ranted that Ocean should be nominated regardless.

"I'll tell you this right now, if his album is not nominated in no categories, I'm not showing up to the Grammys," West said at one of his shows. "As artists, we've got to come together to fight the bulls--t."

Ocean also shared that his creative pursuits go beyond music — as evident in the visual aspect of "Endless."

"I believe that I'm one of the best in the world at what I do, and that's all I've ever wanted to be," he told the Times. "It's more interesting for me to figure out how to be superior in areas where I'm naïve, where I'm a novice."
