The more things fall apart around Drake, the better he comes out looking.
While performing in London on Wednesday, the “Fake Love” singer literally saw the stage collapse around him and recovered nicely by finishing the show with special guest Travis Scott, then telling the sold-out crowd that he’d reimburse them for their tickets.
But it was a deal that fell through two weeks ago that may have saved Drake a lot of headaches.
The Canadian superstar was contacted about performing at a party in Washington, D.C., that coincided with President Trump's inauguration, but he decided against it, much to the dismay of retired fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr., who was hosting the event.
“The theme was ‘Retro to Rap,’” says a source close to the Moblze Foundation shindig that was produced by billionaire Colt Ventures founder Darren Blanton. “They were negotiating with Drake and Kid Rock.”
Two other sources tied to the event also reportedly told Confidenti@l they'd been told Rock and Drake would perform, but weren't sure why those appearances didn't come to fruition.
Drake was initially offered $750,000 to perform, but turned it down because all of the pushback that artists performing in Washington, D.C., on Inauguration Day were getting.
“Floyd tried to assure him that this was not a political ball,” “That it was a fund-raiser tied to mentoring kids.”
But still, Drake's camp wouldn’t go near the radioactive inauguration weekend, though they did put out feelers to see if organizers would double their offer.
“At the last minute, Drake’s camp came back and said he'd consider it for $1.5 million, but organizers wouldn't go that high”
As Kanye West and Chrisette Michele can attest, black singers who have appeared friendly with the race-baiting Prez have seen fans turn on them in droves.
The D.C. event went on without Drake, thanks to performances by rappers French Montana, Fat Joe and the Alex Donner Orchestra, which closed the show with “My Way.” Drake headed to Amsterdam the following week to kick off his “Boy Meets World Tour,” which continues Feb. 5 in London.
