Dee Barnes Attack From Dr. Dre Gets Cut "Straight Outta Compton"

Dee Barnes was cut straight outta "Straight Outta Compton."

The script for $60 million rap biopic initially included a scene showing Dr. Dre throttling music journalist Dee Barnes, but it didn't end up in the finished product, The Los Angeles Times reports.

In the scene describing the 1991 attack, the young N.W.A. rapper was described as confronting the hip-hop reporter at a party with "eyes glazed, drunk, with an edge of nastiness, contempt."

Dre was reportedly upset over a segment Barnes had done with former N.W.A. member Ice Cube on her popular hip-hop show "Pump It Up!"

The script had Dre telling Barnes, "Saw that [expletive] you did with Cube. Really had you under his spell, huh? Ate up everything he said. Let him diss us. Sell us out," The Times reported.

Barnes replies she'd simply let Cube talk and tell his story Dre accuses her of making N.W.A. "look like fools."

The scene gets heated and Barnes tosses a drink in Dre's face. He then attacks her, "flinging her around like a rag-doll" while she cries for help.

None of that, though, appears in the movie, which was written by Jonathan Herman and Andrea Berloff and directed by F. Gary Gray.

In a lengthy Gawker essay Wednesday, Barnes vented her frustration over the filmmaker's choice to ignore the attack.

Barnes wrote that she was glad she didn't have to watch the scene — "I didn't want to see a depiction of me getting beat up" — but added, "What should have been addressed is that it occurred."

"The biggest problem with 'Straight Outta Compton' is that it ignores several of N.W.A.'s own harsh realities," Barnes wrote.

In an interview at a screening last week, Gray answered a question about the omitted scene by saying that not every incident from N.W.A.'s history could fit into a two hour movie.

"There's so many things you can add and subtract. Cube always said it - you can make five different N.W.A. movies. We made the one we wanted to make," Gray said.
