Stormy singer Chris Brown got a lecture and another court date from a California judge Monday after flunking a Virginia drug test related to his probation for assaulting Rihanna.
The drug test, done June 18, wasn’t ordered by his California judge. But random testing is customary in Brown's former home state of Virginia, where he’s been serving the community labor requirement of his 2009 felony.
“You apparently did have a drug test, and that drug test came out positive for marijuana,” Los Angeles judge Patricia Schnegg said as Brown listened intently. He wore a tie, a white dress shirt, jeans and a black and grey vest.
Schnegg said Brown told Virginia probation officials he had a medical marijuana card and that the weed was consumed legally in California.
His medical marijuana card was from acupuncturist Ketino Karakalidi.
“I’m not going to order a subsequent drug test, but this is my advice to you: You are not an average person,” Judge Schnegg said. “You’re not only in the public eye but you’re on probation … I’m going to caution you. You should be very mindful of obeying all laws and rules.”
She said Brown has “a lot of kids” who idolize him, and he “should also be conscious of that."
“Your mom knows, right mom?” Schnegg asked Brown’s mom Joyce Hawkins, who was sitting in the front row.
“I do,” Hawkins replied with a smile.
The judge ordered both sides back to court Nov. 1 to set a date for a probation violation hearing. Prosecutors claimed Monday that recent reporting from Virginia probation officials “indicates” potential violations.
Virginia officials said Brown may have violated his travel restrictions, prosecutors claimed Monday.
Brown’s attorney Mark Geragos said Brown pulled “double shifts” with his community labor in August to finish a 120 hours.
According to Virginia police, he has now completed his community service. They say he did 1,402 hours, more than his six month sentence. He cleaned stables, washed cars, painted and cleaned bathroom floors.
He said Brown was following his court orders and did not object when the judge ordered Brown’s probation transferred to California now that the superstar owns property in Los Angeles County.
The judge never mentioned the bloody brawl between Brown’s and Drake’s entourages at SoHo hotspot W.i.P. in June.
That bottle-throwing brouhaha was blamed on feuding over the two singers’ shared former flame Rihanna.
The club’s owners later sued Brown and Drake for $16 million, claiming the artists did nothing to stop the June 14 fracas that has sullied the nightspot’s name.
No criminal charges were filed in the fight, though it left multiple bystanders injured. It also scratched the cornea of NBA star Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs.
Brown, 23, skated through a different firestorm last year after a temper tantrum at ABC studios following a March 2011 appearance on “Good Morning America” triggered a response by New York police.
In that incident, Brown trashed a dressing room, hurled a chair at a window and ripped off his T-shirt after co-host Robin Roberts questioned him about the Rihanna beating.
ABC staffers called security, an insider told the Daily News, but a formal complaint was never filed with authorities.
Brown got five years of probation and six months of community labor after pleading guilty to the felony assault that left Rihanna’s face bloodied and bruised.
A police affidavit said Brown punched, choked and bit the pop star before trying to push her out of the car.
Follow-up recording collaborations and a kiss Rihanna planted on Brown at the recent MTV VMA awards have fueled persistent rumors the singers are close once again.
