“The Breakfast Club” DJ Charlamagne tha God and Rolling Stone have buried the hatchet over the magazine’s misidentifying Charlamagne as a rapper who made controversial “transphobic” comments on his show — by making a joint donation to charity.
The brouhaha began when transgender rights activist Janet Mock recently appeared on “The Breakfast Club” for what turned into an awkward interview.
Days later a rapper named Lil Duval went on the show and made offensive remarks about transgender people. Mock then penned a response piece for Allure.com. But when Rolling Stone picked up the piece, the music site posted a headline online reading, “Janet Mock Speaks Out Following Charlamagne tha God’s Controversial Morning Show.”
Charlamagne threatened legal action and Rolling Stone apologized, posting, “Rolling Stone mischaracterized Charlamagne’s position in its original search headline, conflating comments by Lil Duval, a guest on his show, with his own. We sincerely apologize to Charlamagne the God for the error. Charlamagne has since clarified that he believes violence against transgender people is wrong and has declared himself an ally of trans people.”
Charlamagne’s legal rep, Michael Weinstein of Lavely & Singer, exclusively told Page Six on Thursday, “Charlamagne tha God and Rolling Stone are pleased to announce they are making a donation to the National Black Justice Coalition. We hope this gesture brings more attention to the very important issue of equal rights and treatment of the LGBTQ community.”
