Jay-Z’s queen, Beyonce, is praising her man after a successful day with the release of his “Magna Carta Holy Grail” album and asks that others “bow down” to hip-hop royalty.
The 31-year-old singer posted a schoolboy photo of her husband and father to their daughter, Blue Ivy, on her Instagram with the caption “Platinum #MagnaCarta.”
On Tuesday, the same day as his project’s debut, Jay-Z was presented with a platinum plaque for a million copies sold. The million came from digital album sales through the 43-year-old Brooklyn-born rapper’s deal with Samsung.
The company initially bought the albums in order to give them away to its customers in exchange for downloading a Samsung Jay-Z app. This innovative marketing technique has caused the Recording Industry Association of America to redefine how it counts album sales in order to include the digital purchases.
To show their support of Jay’s success with Samsung, RIAA posted a Facebook pic of its executives with the “Holy Grail” rapper holding his plaque.
While Jay-Z’s latest musical installment is undoubtedly a hit and is already considered his 12th platinum album by RIAA and Samsung, others may not be so quick to count it as such just yet.
“Our role as the chart of record is to set the rules, and hopefully even raise the level of play,” Bill Werde, Billboard magazine’s editorial director, said. “It is in this spirit that I say it wasn’t as simple as you might think to turn down Jay-Z when he requested that we count the million albums that Samsung ‘bought’ as part of a much larger brand partnership, to give away to Samsung customers.”
Still, Billboard intends to stay true to its traditional monitoring of album sales and expects to see hundreds of thousands in the album’s first week.
“I’ve been told that label sources expect first-week sales of the album to be in line with the 400,000-450,000 his recent albums have shifted,” Werde added. “That will almost certainly give Jay his lucky 13th No. 1 on the Billboard 200.”
