Amy Winehouse died unintentionally from drinking too much alcohol, a British coroner ruled Wednesday.

The "Rehab" singer consumed "a very large quantity" of booze before her sudden death, and her blood and urine samples showed she was 4.5 times over the legal drunk-driving limit, according to investigators.

Coroner Suzanne Greenaway gave a verdict of "death by misadventure" at a hearing into the artist's death, saying she passed away from accidental alcohol poisoning.

"The unintended consequence of such potentially fatal levels [of alcohol] was her sudden and unexpected death," Greenaway said.

The Grammy Award-winning artist was 27 when she was found dead in bed inside her London home on July 23.

Empty vodka bottles lay strewn around her bedroom, according to Police Detective Inspector Les Newman who was called to the scene after Winehouse's lifeless body was found by a security guard.

The heavily tattooed musician battled drug and alcohol addiction for years and was released from a rehabilitation program two months before her untimely death.

A few weeks before she died, Winehouse was also booed off stage by fans in Serbia after appearing incoherent.

An initial autopsy proved inconclusive but ruled no traces of illegal drugs were found in her body.

Her doctor, Christina Romete, said the singer had resumed drinking days before she died after a period of abstinence.

Romete saw her the night before she died and described her as "tipsy but calm," and said she did not speak about suicide and mentioned her upcoming birthday.

Romete said Winehouse was prescribed drugs including the sedative Librium to cope with the alcohol withdrawal symptoms, but the coroner said these did not contribute to her death.

A spokesman for the Winehouse family said it was a relief to find out what finally happened to their loved one.

"The court heard that Amy was battling hard to conquer her problems with alcohol and it is a source of great pain to us that she could not win in time," said Chris Goodman."
