“Pimp hop” rapper Wais P — a former Jay Z protégé accused of pimping in real life — pleaded guilty to a felony drunken driving charge Monday.
The performer, whose real name is Malcolm Byer, 42, will get a sentence that could amount to time served in exchange for the plea.
Byer has two previous DWIs, which elevated the seriousness of his latest bust. He will also have to install an ignition interlock device on any car he drives.
He took an offer made by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Michael Obus after prosecutors sought a much stiffer sentence during plea negotiations.
“I’m very happy with the resolution of the case because we went through almost a year of trying to convince the DA’s office (to make) a realistic offer,” defense lawyer Theodore Goldbergh said.
“There was no accident in the case; there was no injury,” he added. “What he really wanted all along was treatment for alcoholism.”
The rapper, a Crown Heights native, is also about to stand trial for promoting prostitution.
Goldbergh and co-counsel Glenn Hardy expect to defend Byer and will argue to a jury that the language used in hip hop culture and by Byer does not mean he’s really managing prostitutes.
Byer was busted last year for promoting prostitution after appearing in court on his 2014 DWI case. His arrest was part of the NYPD’s operation “Bright Lights, Big City,” which sought to dismantle sex trafficking operations in New York.
Goldbergh previously argued that the case “involves a great deal of speculation” rooted in assumptions about the language his successful rapper client uses.
A trial date has been set for May 18 in Manhattan Supreme Court.
