Ab-Soul On His Criticism Of TDE Cover: “My Boss Is Not Kendrick”

For XXL’s October/November issue, we featured the West Coast juggernaut TDE on our cover. With Kendrick Lamar leading the pack, his homies Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q and Jay Rock were right by his side representing Black Hippy.
Hours after the TDE cover hit the Internet, Soul tweeted that he wasn’t really feeling the cover. “If y’all keep printing “Kendrick Lamar & Black Hippy” I will remove myself from the group. Thanks.” Now, Montreality has the scoop on Soul’s explanation about his tweet.

“I don’t want people to think like Kendrick is like Lil Wayne. Or like 50 Cent,” he says. “It’s not G-Unit, you know what I mean? My boss is not Kendrick. Kendrick didn’t sign me. Kendrick didn’t add me to his group.”

The Black-Lipped Bastard continued to say that Black Hippy was already a collective before they became famous. “Don’t get the wrong idea. We’re not like band members or something like that. We don’t just stand there in the background and dance when Kendrick raps.”

Further along the interview, he states that it is all love regarding his relationship with Kendrick. In addition, he doesn’t mind when the media asks about the success of K. Dot. “Me and Kendrick aren’t co-workers. That’s my brother. That’s my family. And he deserves everything that is happening and I will answer every question about him. I am not bothered by that at all.”
