Pepsi Accused Of Hypocrisy After Withdrawing Festival Sponsorship Over Kanye West Booking

Kanye West’s Wireless Festival headliner announcement sparked backlash, prompting Pepsi to withdraw its long-standing sponsorship amid political and public pressure. However, the move triggered fresh outrage, with fans accusing the brand of selective morality and highlighting past associations with controversial figures and events. It only took a few days for the euphoria around Kanye West’s comeback to turn chaotic. Fresh off two sold‑out nights at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium, where 80,000 fans per night sang along to Heartless and Lauryn Hill made a surprise appearance, the rapper’s triumphant return has turned sombre. Wireless Festival announced that Ye would headline all three nights in London this July, his first UK show in 11 years. Almost immediately, the backlash followed, as critics slammed the booking as a grotesque normalisation of someone who has repeatedly praised Hitler, sold swastika T‑shirts, and declared himself a Nazi. Then came the twist that has everyone talking. Pepsi, the festival’s sponsor for more than a decade, withdrew its support on Sunday. But instead of winning universal praise, the soda giant is now being dragged through the mud. Fans are calling it selective outrage at its finest. They allege that the same brand that couldn’t stomach Kanye’s words has happily stayed silent while continuing to operate in Israel, sponsored Super Bowl halftime shows headlined by convicted domestic abuser Dr Dre, and looked the other way when far more literal violence was on the line. The brand’s official statement was brief and avoided naming West directly, but fans know what it meant. A Pepsi spokesperson simply told multiple British news outlets: “Pepsi has decided to withdraw its sponsorship of Wireless Festival.” The festival had been officially called “Pepsi MAX Presents Wireless,” with the partnership stretching back to 2015. No further explanation was offered. But the timing told a different story. The announcement came just hours after UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer publicly condemned the booking. Starmer told the Sun newspaper: “It is deeply concerning that Kanye West has been booked to perform at Wireless despite his previous antisemitic remarks and celebration of Nazism. Antisemitism in any form is abhorrent and must be confronted firmly wherever it appears.” Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey went even further, calling for West to be banned from entering the UK altogether. London Mayor Sadiq Khan also distanced City Hall from the festival, saying the rapper’s past comments “are simply not reflective of London’s values.“Following the mounting backlash surrounding the announcement and Sir Keir Starmer speaking out, Pepsi’s position as festival sponsor became untenable. Festivals are about bringing people together, the only decision was to withdraw.”
