Geno Auriemma Apologizes To Dawn Staley After Final Four Incident

Geno Auriemma has issued an apology following his heated exchange with Dawn Staley at the end of UConn’s Final Four loss to South Carolina. In a statement released through the university, Auriemma acknowledged that his behavior in the closing moments of the semifinal did not reflect his standards or those of the program. “There’s no excuse for how I handled the end of the game vs. South Carolina,” he said. “It’s unlike what I do and what our standard is here at Connecticut. I want to apologize to the staff and the team at South Carolina. It was uncalled for in how I reacted.” He added, “The story should be how well South Carolina played, and I don’t want my actions to detract from that. I’ve had a great relationship with their staff, and I sincerely want to apologize to them. The incident occurred in the final seconds of UConn’s 62-48 defeat, when Auriemma approached Staley for what appeared to be a postgame handshake before tensions escalated. The two exchanged words at midcourt and had to be separated, with Staley continuing to shout toward the UConn bench as Auriemma walked off toward the tunnel. The apology comes after Auriemma had initially stood by his in-game frustration, including comments made during a sideline interview in which he criticized officiating and referenced Staley’s interactions with referees. Staley, speaking after the game, declined to escalate the situation but made clear the exchange was initiated by Auriemma. “He’s the one that initiated the conversation, she said. “I don’t want what happened there to dampen what we were able to accomplish today.
