A rare pink hippo was spotted along the banks of the Mara River in Kenya, much tot he delight of two photographers that captured the animal with their cameras. The pair of photographers shared their images with National Geographic and described their encounter with the rare pink hippo on their own blog.
The photographers - brothers who run a blog together, said: "Just as we started to tuck into our breakfast, we looked up and gawked, open-mouthed, as a pink hippopotamus emerged from the river!" The hippo is not an albino, but rather, likely suffers from a skin condition called Leucism. Leucism is an equally rare condition characterized by reduced pigmentation in animals and humans.
Unlike albinism, it is caused by a reduction in all types of skin pigment, not just melanin.
