YNW Melly Faces The Death Penalty In Double Murder Case

Rapper YNW Melly is facing the death penalty for the alleged killing of two friends last year, court records show.

The once-rising artist, whose real name is Jamell Demons, committed two cold-blooded murders for financial gain, the Broward County State Attorney’s Office said in its notice of intent to seek capital punishment.

The crimes were “especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel,” according to the court document filed last week.

Miramar police arrested the Kanye West-collaborator in February in connection with the fatal shootings of his friends Christopher Thomas Jr., 19, and Anthony Williams, 21.

Authorities say the 19-year-old and his pal Cortlen Henry, 20, tried to cover up the Oct. 26, 2018 slaying by staging the crime scene to look like a drive-by shooting.

The victims — Williams was known as YNW Sakchaser and Thomas as YNW Juvy — were trying to forge their own rap careers when they were killed. Demons was an emerging talent in Florida’s thriving hip-hop scene and had worked with West on a song released earlier this year.

Demons, who was jailed without bond, has pleaded not guilty. His next court appearance is Thursday.
