Woody Allen has spoken out in support of fellow filmmaker Roman Polanski, who is currently under house arrest in connection with a 1977 child sex scandal.
"It's something that happened many years ago ... he has suffered, he has not been allowed to go to the United States. He was embarrassed by the whole thing," Allen, 74, said during an interview at the Cannes Film Festival, according to E! Online. "He has paid his dues, he has had a hard life. The girl involved doesn't want anything to happen to him."
Polanski, 76, fled the United States in 1978 to avoid sentencing after pleading guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl. He was taken into custody in September and is currently under house arrest in Gstaad, Switzerland.
Last week, new allegations arose when British actress Charlotte Lewis claimed Polanski had sexually abused her in 1982 when she was 16.
Though it remains unclear as to whether Allen was aware of Polanski's latest allegations when he made the comments Saturday, he previously signed a petition calling for the filmmaker's release.
"He's an artist, he's a nice person, he did something wrong and he paid for it. [The critics] are not happy unless he pays the rest of his life. They would be happy if they could execute him in a firing squad," Allen said.
Allen is no stranger to scandal himself. He made his own headlines in 1992 when his longtime partner, Mia Farrow, discovered he was having an affair with her adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn, then 22. Allen went on to marry Previn in 1997.
While Polanski faces possible extradition back to the U.S., Allen believes the money used in his case could be put to better use.
"There are a million people out there in the United States, robbing banks ... shooting people and selling narcotics. And they're going after a 75-, 77-year-old man who has for years has caused no trouble who's lived a good life," Allen said. "I feel they are wasting a lot of money to do this and it is not necessary ... it is self-aggrandizing and it's money foolishly spent."
He added, "They should take the money they spent on the Polanski case and go after drug dealers and rapists. Polanski . . . did something and he has been penalized for it. Enough is enough."
