The “Twackers” have struck again.
Twitter is looking into how an apparent hacker accessed 50,000 account usernames and passwords and published them online Tuesday.
The company also downplayed the security breach, saying in a statement that about 20,000 login credentials were redundancies, suspended spam accounts or mismatched account information.
"We are currently looking into the situation," a Twitter spokeswoman said in an email to the Daily News. "In the meantime, we have pushed out password resets to accounts that may have been affected."
Five long lists of usernames and passwords were posted on the file-sharing site Pastebin Tuesday by an anonymous user. The hactivist news aggregator Air Demon published the news of the leak, and it quickly spread through the Web.
"This hack is just an alert to other millions of Twitter users that they could be hacked anytime," Air Demon warned.
Twitter has about 140 million active users.
The popular microblogging platform is no stranger to getting hacked. Celebrities, major news organizations and members of Congress have had their accounts taken over and tweeting out rogue messages.
In recent months a phishing scam spread through Twitter via direct messages, according to multiple reports. The DMs suggested someone was "saying really mean things about you" and promoted a spammy link. Clicking on the link sends the same message out to all the followers of the duped user.
For safe tweeting, users should choose a strong password that’s not easy to guess, and regularly monitor their Twitter feed for unfamiliar tweets.
The company is directing anyone concerned that their account has been compromised to reset their password and immediately revoke access for third-party applications.
Users can view all the apps and sites that have permission to access their Twitter by going to Profile, Edit Your Profile, Applications. More information is available at Twitter’s Help Center.
