A young Thai woman could face the death penalty after she allegedly swallowed more than 1,200 ecstasy pills wrapped in plastic in an attempt to smuggle them into the resort island of Bali, authorities said.
Custom officials said 24-year-old Sophawat Ueamduean appeared nervous and was found to have a hard stomach following a body search conducted at Bali's international airport.
She was sent to the hospital where doctors found a jaw-dropping 1,280 ecstasy pills in her stomach, according to the Bangkok Post.
"The pills were in a number of plastic wraps which she swallowed about 90 times," Bali customs chief I Made Wijaya said during a press conference, where a crying Ueamduean was brought in on Monday.
The pills weighed nearly a pound and were worth approximately $50,000.
Ueamduean told cops she was a dancer in Bangkok and that an Israeli man offered her to pay $656 to gulp and smuggle the drugs.
Under Indonesia's tough drug laws, she could face life in prison or a death sentence by firing squad.
