Desperate and starving Syrians have apparently been pictured chopping up a zoo lion in order to get some meat.
The picture, circulating on the Internet, shows three Syrian men surrounding the corpse of a lion, thought to be from a zoo close to the capital, Damascus
One of the men is holding up the beast's head to the camera, another appears to be hacking meat from one of the animal's legs.
The picture has been circulated to show the desperate plight of Syrians trapped in the bitter civil war. Others claim the animal is being skinned to provide warmth during the winter months. Another aspect is that the word "Assad" means lion in Arabic and means the photo may have been taken as a message to the country's leader, Bashar al-Assad.
It is not known how the animal died, reports The Independent newspaper in Britain.
Starvation is increasingly a problem in the war-torn country.
Clerics recently said people would be allowed to eat meat, such as cats, dogs and even donkeys, normally not allowed for religious reasons to help those who are hungry, added The Independent.
