Animal rights activists want the Brooklyn District Attorney to slam the brakes on Mike Tyson's new Animal Planet reality show featuring pigeon racing.
The group PETA charged in a letter to the DA that the show, "Taking on Tyson," is cruel to animals because it exploits them for profit.
It claims the Brooklyn-made show may also break New York's anti-gambling laws.
"It is likely that extensive wagering will take place on the outcome of these races," general counsel Jeffrey Kerr wrote.
He added that even if there are no explicit wagers, paying the ex-heavyweight boxing champ to do the show is an illegal "reward" for animal racing.
Taking on Tyson, in which pigeons race in the air, is set to start filming in Brooklyn next month and air next year.
"Animal Planet needs more programs like Whale Wars and Animal Cops, in which people go to bat for animals, and fewer programs that showcase cruelty and profiteering at animals' expense," said PETA president Ingrid Newkirk.
Animal Planet spokeswoman Patricia Kollappallil said "there have never been any plans for wagering on the pigeon races."
She pledged that the birds would be "cherished and respected by their owners, including Mr. Tyson."
