The blizzard that struck the New York area Sunday and Monday is wreaking havoc on the roads and rails.
While the Sanitation Department has vowed to keep plows running around the clock, swathes of highways and streets remain impassable across the city. Area bridges and tunnels, including the George Washington Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge, are subject to closures and delays for plowing.
Given the road conditions, mass transit would seem to be the better option, but there are major delays and suspensions across the board.
MTA has buses running, though the conditions on the roads are resulting in major delays.
Subways are running -- at least below ground -- with significant delays. No. 1 traisn are bypassing Dyckman Street Station and No. 2 service is suspended between E. 180th St. Station and Gun Hill Road Station; No. 5 service is suspended between the E. 180th St. and the Eastchester-Dyre Ave. stations; A train service is suspended the Euclid Ave. and Far Rockaway-Mott Ave. Station; M train service is not running between Middle Village and Forrest Hills, while the D train is suspended between 36th St. and Coney Island-Stillwell Ave; F train service is suspended between the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue Station and the Jay Street-Metro Tech Station in both directions; Q trains are not running between Coney-Island-Stillwell Ave. and Dekalb Avenue; the N is also not running between Coney Island-Stillwell and 59th Street in Brooklyn; Trains on the M line are not running; G train service is temporarily suspended because of a stalled train; L train service is suspended between the Myrtle-Wyckoff Ave. and Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway.
The Staten Island Ferry has stopped running and the entire SIRTOA line on Staten Island is shut down, making it difficult to get in and out of the borough.
NJ Transit has suspended all bus lines and rail service is operating on a weekend schedule. PATH train service between New Jersey and New York is running only between Grove Street and World Trade Center or Grove Street and 33rd Street -- and with significant delays.
Long Island Rail Road service will run on a holiday schedule for Monday because of the snow, but as of the early morning all service was suspended due to the high snow drifts along the tracks.
On MetroNorth, New Haven Line service is suspended in both directions due to equipment and switch failures caused by the blizzard. A regular Sunday schedule is in effect on the Hudson and Harlem lines.
All area airports are closed.
City officials are urging commuters to stay home if possible.
