WTF! MAYOR BLOOMBERG WANTS TO DO AWAY WITH FREE SCHOOL LUNCHES!

For city students, there may someday be no such thing as a free lunch.

With $2.5 million in school lunch balances overdue this year, Mayor Bloomberg Friday acknowledged the city may have to eventually cut off kids who don't pay.

"Well, it may be we get to that. It may be we get to that," Bloomberg said, responding to WOR-AM radio host John Gambling's suggestion that students "don't get lunch unless (they) pay."

Faced with mounting fees, Department of Education officials told principals last year that they had to collect the money - or it would be deducted from their budgets.

After principals complained about becoming bill collectors, officials extended the deadline to Feb. 16. But the city this week pushed the deadline back again."We're trying to work with the principals to see if we can get the parents to pay the freight, have them come up," Bloomberg said. "They're supposed to pay."

Bloomberg said the cash is necessary since the city is facing budget cuts from the state and may have to lay off teachers.

"Last year we think it was about $7 million expense to the city. $7 million could go into the classrooms," he said. "That'd take care of a lot of extra teachers and that sort of thing."

About three-quarters of city students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches, which cost a quarter. Full price is $1.50.

A spokeswoman for the mayor said there is no plans to change the current policy that all students get lunch.

While Gambling said, "You don't see too many kids starving in the streets of New York," the mayor showed compassion for kids whose parents don't pay up.

"Maybe if the parents don't pay, you don't want the kids to suffer," he said. "But the real world is, somebody's got to pay. Lunches don't come for free."
