IN THE STREETS & ON THE WEB

A 44-year-old man plummeted to his death from the top floor of a Texas mall in front of dozens of horrified witnesses, police said.

Dallas authorities said Crisan Hindorean's death is being investigated as a suicide. Witnesses said Hindorean, of Boulder, Colo., dove from the top floor of The Galleria around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The man was seen arguing with a woman before he jumped, narrowly missing a mall employee before crashing onto an indoor ice rink. The rink was not in use at the time of Hindorean's fatal plunge.

"People were just covering their mouths," shopper Steve Eberhart told Dallas television station KDFW.

"People were already in tears, in disbelief and already starting to talk -- asking how something like this could have happened."

Eberhart said that Hindorean appeared to be alive for a few moments after he hit the ground.

"We first saw him and he was moving very, very slightly, and then I saw his head tilt to the side and there was no more movement," he told KDFW.

Paramedics took Hindorean to Medical City hospital where he died.

Cell phone video shot at the scene showed paramedics gathered around Hindorean near the middle of the rink.

Hindorean was shopping with his girlfriend and her daughter before he jumped, but they weren't around him when he fell, the Dallas Morning News reported.

The Galleria closed the rink after the incident, but the rest of the mall remained open.
