A German man's gecko obsession has landed him in a New Zealand prison.
Hans Kurt Kubus, a 58-year-old reptile collector, will spend 14 weeks behind bars for trying to depart the island country with 44 geckos and skinks, a judge ruled on Wednesday.
He was nabbed at Christchurch International Airport in December, and was caught with the lizards in a hand-sewn package hidden in his underwear.
On top of his jail time, Kubus will pay a $5,000 New Zealand ($3,540) fine, according to the Associated Press.
Kubus had pled guilty to trading in exploited species without a permit and hunting absolutely protected wildlife without authority under the Wildlife Act, as well as five more charges under the Trade in Endangered Species Act.
The geckos alone could have pulled in 2,000 euros ($2,800) each, said Department of Conservation prosecutor Mike Bodie.
